Russian Cultural and Language Center of the Faculty of Humanities (BTK) is launching a new language course primarily for foreign students enrolled at the University of Debrecen. Besides students of our university, high school students and other residents of Debrecen can also take advantage of this opportunity to learn Russian at one of three levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced).

It was Nobel Prize-winning chemist Bernard L. Feringa who opened the event called 20th International Conference on Chiroptical Spectroscopy, which was held in Hungary again after twenty-two years at the University of Debrecen. During the four-day conference, distinguished researchers from around the world gave talks on the latest chiroptical techniques and their applications for studying the spatial structure of organic molecules.

Hungarian and foreign researchers analyzed data from more than 2.6 million zoo births to find out whether it is truly random which gender is born more frequently among mammals and birds. The results show surprising distortions that could jeopardize the long-term success of species conservation programs. The research was published in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports.

The women's tennis team led by Dean Kinga Bágyi achieved the best result in its history at the European University Games. At the tournament in Portugal, the university's athletes finished in third place.

Thanks to research conducted at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen, we are a few steps closer to overcoming ALS, a hitherto and currently incurable neurological disease. The researchers working on exploring and curing this disease will be awarded a publication prize called Gróf Tisza István Debreceni Egyetemért Alapítvány és a Debreceni Egyetem Publikációs Díja [Publication Prize of Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen and the University of Debrecen].

This year, almost 80 students from as many as 27 countries are coming to Debrecen Summer School to learn Hungarian language and culture. At the current summer course, which lasts from July 21 to August 15, the youngest student is 16 years of age, while the oldest is 86. The number of young people learning the Hungarian language abroad is growing, and more and more start to learn Hungarian because of their family ties and heritage.

More participants than ever before attended the twenty-fourth Summer Academy masterclasses at the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen and Zoltán Kodály World Youth Orchestra also gave a concert of extraordinary quality. According to Judit Váradi, the artistic director of the related series of events, this success is yet another confirmation that the Summer Academy is much needed and its prestige is growing both nationally and internationally.

Topics such as the harmonization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with medical research, the role of artificial intelligence and network pharmacology, as well as opportunities in next-generation pharmaceuticals and theranostics, were discussed at the Doctor Honoris Causa Symposium on Thursday. At the scientific session, Professor Shao Li– member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Tsinghua University – presented his research findings. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Debrecen on Friday.

Representatives of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen and the Faculty of Medicinal and Industrial Plants of Kirkuk University in Iraq signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday in order to develop and implement an exchange program for students and researchers, initiate professional cooperation and promote joint research projects.
